Hawaiian Massage 6 Key Differences

Before your Traditional Old Style Hawaiian Massage treatment  begins, your therapist will spend some time talking to you about your life, checking your body's range of movement and explaining the process to you.

Next it's up onto the table for your selected Massage therapy. Your massage starts in the Traditional way with a Healing Oli (Chant) and Pule (Prayer) signalling you're in good hands. From start to finish, it’s all about following the Traditional Methods, Teachings and Understanding of our Ancestors. And yes, you are drapped correctly unlike most of what you see on You Tube where videos show a small sarong placed across your bottom. This is NOT correct in our practice of Lomi Lomi; you are respected always.

Afterwards there's time to check in if you need to - ask questons, explore your experience and insights, discuss further treatment plans and ideas, health solutions and options that help to enrich your life and take the best care of yourself.

Traditional Old Style Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage is not like any other massage treatment you will have experienced. There's more of everything in the Lomi Lomi - more strokes, more beneficial techniques, more muscle groups worked simultaneously, more relaxation achieved and more pain relieved and that’s just the physical experience - after you experience this healing massage therapy treatment you'll understand what the other styles, including the better known "swedish" massage (that's the one generally used in most massage therapies and beauticians), and remedial massage (the one that is often used for “healing” physical ailments) leave out.

Hawaiian culture views the body as one and that the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual are all part of the "whole" self – so when healing occurs on one level all levels are affected. That is, you can't treat the body without also treating the mind and you can’t treat the mind without the Spirit. So Traditional Hawaiian Massage looks after your physical, mental, emotional, spiritual needs in one treatment.

Traditional Hawaiian treatments always start and end in the traditional way with a Pule and Oli - a traditional prayer and chant, a “blessing” for you and for the healing bodywork (the massage) done. In Traditional Old Style Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage, the massage table is considered the alter and you are the most sacred thing upon it.

Six Key Points of Difference - Traditional Old Style Hawaiian Lomi Lomi:

  • pain memories are not just stored in the mind, but also in the body. Strokes are designed to help the body let go of its old patterns and behaviours, which can cause as many stresses and strains as muscle tension, resulting in better mental and emotional health

  • ensures the hands never leave the body. Stokes are performed in systematic sets - the whole body, or whole connecting muscle groups and fascia are treated at the same time. It's more relaxing and allows tight muscles to be released slowly and pain free

  • combines long, flowing strokes which follow your body's natural lines, targeted trigger point work and acupressure points for pain areas activating the body's own healing system, resulting in deep feelings of peace, wellbeing and healthiness that can last for weeks afterwards

  • no painful elbows or forearms are used which cause the body to naturally contract and stiffen - which is what you already have. Similarly, when something is tender you don't feel it with your forearms, you use your hands. Sensitive hands can feel into sensitive muscles in a way that forearms can't.

  • Traditional Old Style Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage treats physical, mental and emotional issues at the same time. It's a full treatment from head to toe - you don't need to find a number of massage "specialists" because Traditional Old Style Lomi Lomi practitioners are specially trained in whole body care. It can be a remedial massage as well as a healing, relaxation massage experience.

  • Traditional Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage is part of a spiritual healing system - when the disconnect happens on a spiritual level, the traditional understanding is that the physical body, the emotions and the mind are also impacted. So Traditional Hawaiian Lomi Lomi corrects the disconnect and brings you back into alignment on every level. You then experience Lokahi - unity and harmony

Training in this type of healing work is very specific and a life-long commitment. Julia train’s very hard at least weekly throughout the year to ensure each person is treated correctly and in accordance with the Teachings. It's also important to understand that not all Hawaiian Massages are the same - although some are called "Hawaiian" because they were developed by a Hawaiian, not all are traditional. Kumu Pa’a Lawrence shares that Kahuna Massage, Ka Huna Massage, Flying, treatments that are termed “shamanic”, “huna” teachings, Lomi Lomi Temple Style Massage are not the traditional, cultural Kanaka Maoli (Indigenous Hawaiian) Teachings. They may make you feel good, but they’re not the traditonal experience. Just something to think about…

In an envrionment that provides relaxation and care - this is your chance to experience all-in-one traditional Hawaiian Bodywork (which you might call massage therapy), that is a great solution for enhancing body, mind and spirit health as well as creating happier life balance. You'll come in feeling tired and stressed and leave feeling balanced and revitalised.
